World Population Day is an annual event, observed on July 11, which seeks to raise awareness of global population issues. The event was established by the Governing Council of the United Nations Development Programme in 1989. It was inspired by the public interest in Five Billion Day on July 11, 1987, approximately the date on which the world’s population reached five billion people.
This year’s National Day for Helping the Disabled, with the theme, ‘Enhancing Education for the Disabled‘, has caught people’s attention.
In China, there are more than 83 million people with various disabilities, accounting for over 6 percent of the total population.
However, the development of a sound education system for the disabled is a problem in China.
‘People’s Daily’ published an article saying governments should fully mobilize all social forces to create a suitable educational environment for the disabled and to raise people’s awareness.
The article points out that as of 2008, over 1,600 special schools for the disabled were established in China.
May 15 is the International Day of Families. This was established by the General Assembly of the United Nations in 1992.
